Why yes, I am Superman

Today’s ride/walk home from work was maybe the oddest ever. I want to stress that ALL of this is true. Start to finish. I will list the events in numerical order.

1. walking to the train from the building I picked up a street vendors items that are for sale or she would have lost them and been out money. She said thank you and that I am blessed

2. While waiting for the train I give traveling directions to 3 different people and only one of them spoke English. I was able to understand Chinese and Spanish, figure out where they needed to do and tell them how to get there. I think they both blessed me

3. English speaking lost person gets on the same train as me and begins to talk to me. He is drunk and wants to talk about how his life is crappy. I give him the best advise that I could which was “gut it out. life works in cycles. If you are down now, you will be up soon. When you die, you look back and see things pretty much evened out.” He thanked me and told me that I made his Christmas

4. Walking down the street I see a lady standing next to her car with the door open. People are yelling at her to move so that they can drive passed her. I walk over and see that her dog is running around and will not get back in. I get the dog to come close to me and pick her up. The dog licks my face while I put her back in her car. The lady tells me thank you and gets herself situated in the driver’s seat.

5. I walk 20 feet from her and an Old Man is riding a bike next to me and falls into the street. I rush over to help him. He asks me if I speak Italian and I say “no”. I instruct him how to lean on me so that he can get up safely. After that I help him up with his bike and walk on.

6. I get to the corner and a lady is walking up the steps to her house with her kid. She drops the kids blanket so I pick up and hand it to her. As I am doing so, the lady with the dog drives past me and says “What are you Superman?”

Lisa Bianco Interview

Last week we filmed a two part interview with musician Lisa Bianco (www.lisabianco.net). Lisa is as talented as she is pretty as she is sweet. This was a lot of fun for us as well as for Lisa. So much so that she will be one of the performers at the Night of the Living Bands II coming up in April. Enjoy the interview.

Panhandlers

During the Giuliani regime NYC’s homeless people and panhandlers were treated like criminals. If the police came across a street person they would either lock them, take them to a shelter or to a local hotel and the city would pay for them to spend the night there and off the streets. This was all done under the guise of “improving the quality of life for all.”

Once Bloomberg was elected into office the flood gates on the homeless dam burst open and the returned in full force to the street and subway cars of NYC and it looks like they have been busy reproducing.

It is almost impossible to ride a subway to or from work without the mariachi band or break dance troupe performing on the train and asking for money a dollar. The best gimmick to me is the guy that says “I would rather beg you for some money rather than rob you.” Really? Go take the chance ans see how lucky you are. Lazy prick. The other one that I like is the “homeless mom” that is pushing a stroller with a cute little baby in it. At first glance this is heart breaking, it really is, but when I take a closer look, I see that they both are clean, are wearing different clean clothes each time and look well fed. The baby is even wearing better shoes than me. Here is a hint lady, you might want to drop a few pounds and not wash you hair for a few days because you are a little too plump and smell too clean to be a street dweller.

Maybe its me, maybe I have been jaded living in a Post Vince Mcmahon world for so long.

Racism

What in the world is wrong with people? We still have race issues? I can see older people like my parents having hangups with people of different cultures and skin color but young people? Gen-Z should not be committing hate crimes. Have they learned nothing?

It has been almost 20 years since three white kids killed a black kid on 20th ave in Brooklyn. Everyday Al Sharpton marched through Bensonhurst until the killers all came forward. The white people in the neighborhood went NUTS. The thoughts “who the hell does this ‘N’ think he is?” crossed lots of people’s minds. I will not lie, it crossed my mind as well. It was hard for it not too. I was 15-17 years old and didn’t know any better. I was making a judgment out of fear.

Today though, young people are exposed to different types of people at an earlier age. Being around people of different races is the norm. They shouldn’t have contempt or hatred in their minds for people that look different. I thought we were making progress and can put an end to this once we elected a President to lead us who was not white but I guess not.

Please people, learn from the mistakes of your parents. Accept people for what they are. Like or dislike a person based on who they are and not what they look like.

when will it end?

There is a God…..

and he gave us Pizza because he loves us. It can be so piping hot and steaming that it burns the roof of your mouth or right out of the fridge it is always perfect.

Now in Brooklyn there are a million places to get pizza but not everyone makes good pizza. Growing up there were two places on Bath Ave that made great pizza but both made it very different. Papa Charlies’ made it more traditional but Ferrara’s bakery made all their pizza flat and it was a weird shape too.

The best pizza I have ever had in my life comes from Spumoni Gardens on 86th street. They made the best square slices. The sauce would be on top of the cheese. ON TOP! The sauce was sweet too and not bitter. The slice would be the size of a Hershey bar, perfect for munching on during a movie.

Now, I will not lie and say that I have not ever had good pizza out of Brooklyn. Two Boots Pizza, Manhattan is very good. In North Bergen NJ there is a place to get GREAT pizza and ironicly it is called, Brooklyn Pizza and is served in a bag and not in a box.

For the life of me, I cannot imagine living somewhere that did not have a few good pizza places. Pizza Hut, Papa John’s, Domino’s, California Pizza Restaurant and all the other chains do not make pizza. They make dough with Ragu on it.

Having a good slice of pizza is a treat making a good slice of pizza is magic.

Primitive Radio God

Ok, so the headline is a bit misleading but if it read “Primitive Internet Radio Dork” who would read it? So, this week I gave my first newpaper interview to a local Brooklyn newspaper, The Greenpoint Star. The author of the article is a listener of the show. When she asked me via email about the article, I was flattered. I have never done anything like this but she assured me that it would be cool and I wouldn’t come off sounding like, well, a dork.

The article is up on their site (link), Danielle is going to send me some copies of the paper. I will not lie, I am pretty proud of myself right now.

Thank you everyone for listening, reading the blogs and for spreading the word about the show. The cult is growing because of you.

The State of Things….

This blog maybe a bit herky jerky today, sorry in advance.

In a week from now we will elect either the oldest President of record and the first female Vice President OR the frist Black President and a man that is as bland as a bottle of Poland Spring as the Vice President. Both sets of candidates will lead this country into a new era with promises of change and the ability of leadership to return this country to its glory.

Then why are things getting worse? Here in NYC, construction in slowing down, retail has dropped to record lows, Broadway shows will be closing, magazines are going under, office Christmas parties are canceled, etc are taking its toll on people’s moral.

I had to give 5 bucks to a single mom on the train today for lunch. I know she was a single mom cause her baby was with her. I just don’t ever remember things being this bad. Maybe it is our generations’ turn to “have it bad.” Maybe we have had it too good for too long. Maybe the suffering will build some character. Maybe once it is all over and things are back to normal we can look back and say “God damn, we made it through that mess” and appreciate the status quo a bit more.

I doubt it though.
